Cycle Paths - History and Routes
Cycling is a very popular form of transport and over the many decades it has been around, has evolved drastically. It is not only the bikes themselves that have changed over time, but the other elements of the cycling world have followed suit. The cycle path is one that has developed vastly over the past 90 years. When the bike was first produced there were no cycle paths around. Citizens had to cycle on poorly built paths and uneven ground which began to ruin the bikes they were riding. Cyclists then spoke up about the situation which began the story of the bicycle path.
It all started towards the end of the 19th century. This time saw the rise in popularity with cycling. Rather than a hobby it was considered to be a form of transport, which many people took up. At the time there were poor riding facilities and there were no cycle paths and segregated lanes for bikes like there are in today's society. Many who rode campaigned for better quality riding surfaces, paths and cycle routes. In the 1920's the first path for the use of cyclists was created. Thus began the start of the cycle path and many more were due to follow.
When the invention of the car came about, motorists wanted their own roads to drive on. These were to be separated from those choosing to ride a bike. As more and more people began to drive cars, less people chose to use bikes. Bicycle paths and roads for cars where then created separately. This then began the start of the motor road. The separated lanes prove to be a safer way for cyclists and motorists to travel. Across the country and the globe you will various kinds of roads and lanes for cars and cycles. A lot of countries have more bikes than cars and others are the opposite. Each region's roads and cycle lanes differ depending on where you are in the world.
There are many places in the world where you can cycle as a form of leisure or a personal hobby. In Britain alone there are more than five thousand cycle routes that you can ride through. Cycling can lead to a lot of sightseeing and witnessing scenes that you may not necessarily see in cities and towns. Forests, castles, villages and lakes can all been seen whilst riding your bike around Britain. Of course there are other routes available in other countries too, but there are many breathtaking sights to see when riding round the isles of Britain.
