What Kind of Cycle For Your Daily Commute?
The world that we live in today seems to have one technological breakthrough after another. For instance, as soon as you have bought the latest mobile phone, a week later you are reading about the release of the next version.
The same goes for laptops, tablets, televisions, and a lot more things. Luckily, when it comes to bicycles, you do not have to worry about the latest model being out of date in a few months. Even so, the development and advancements in bicycles have still changed dramatically over the last decade. This means that there are now a number of types of bikes available to the commuter and each one is explained below.
Town bikes - These are probably what most city people would consider to be a normal bike. They are not built for speed, and they are not light, so they are not much good for long distance. For commuting to work over a short distance, they are a good option. The bikes may not look great, but they are built to serve a purpose and they do it very well. Gears are simple, and they are easy to ride.
Road Bikes - These are built for speed, and are very light weight compared to other types. It is this type of bike that the professional cyclist will use in races like the Tour de France. They have a wide range of gears, and travel on very thin wheels. The latter can be easily damaged though. Road bikes are not built for comfort, but even so, they are a great option for long distance cycling.
Cyclo-Cross - Built for off-roading, these bikes have become popular with many people. They can be used for sport, commuting, and a nice day out cycling. They are relatively comfortable, and very sturdy. On top of that, they are easy to handle in most situations. Do not expect to reach great speeds, though, as they are not designed for that. Gearing can be a problem in some situations.
Hybrid - Hybrid bikes started out being a cross between mountain and road bikes, but over the last few years they have become a mix of everything, and have no defined class now. They can range from fast and light with lots of gears, too slow and heavy with limited gearing. Which one is best, is down to personal choice.
Touring - This type of bike is a classic. Designed for those people who love to spend hours cycling around and enjoying themselves. These are designed for comfort, and some models can be pretty quick. They are also sturdy enough to do some off-roading. The only downside is that they may not be quick enough for some cyclists.
